Music composer and GWU Assistant Professor Heather Stebbins introduces you to the history and fundamentals of MIDI, an essential tool in any digital music production environment. For ages 21+.  

See demonstrations of the software Ableton Live in this hands-on workshop for beginners. If you'd like to follow along on your personal computer, you can download the free version or trial. You'll learn MIDI protocols and manipulation, how to connect hardware devices, and how to work with MIDI in a DAW.

Please bring the following items to ensure you can fully participate in all activities:

  • Laptop: Please bring your personal laptop.
  • Headphones: Essential for individual audio tasks.
  • MIDI Controllers: If you have any small MIDI controllers, you are welcome to bring them.
  • We will be using Ableton Live 12 during the event. We recommend downloading and installing the free trial version of Ableton Live 12 prior to the event. You can download it from the following link: Ableton Live 12 Free Trial
