7:00pm - 8:00pm
Purcellville Library
Robey Meeting RoomCarla Minosh, a Family Nurse Practitioner specializing in child and adolescent mental health from Advanced Pediatrics, explores the complexities of youth depression and offers resources to help.
Depression is a serious mental health condition that can affect children and adolescents in ways that are often misunderstood or overlooked.
This session covers:
- The signs and symptoms of depression in children and teens, including emotional, behavioral, and physical indicators that may be different from those seen in adults.
- Common causes and contributing factors include genetics, trauma, and environmental stressors.
- How depression affects a child’s social life, academic performance, and overall well-being.
- Treatment options, including therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes, as well as the role of early intervention.
- Practical strategies for parents to provide emotional support, improve communication, and create a home environment that promotes mental health.
- Guidance on when and how to seek professional help and what to expect from the treatment process.
Minosh shares valuable insights and tools with parents who are concerned about their child's mental health or want to be prepared in case signs of depression arise. You will leave with a better understanding of how to recognize depression early and support your child's emotional well-being effectively.
Throughout November, the Purcellville Library is collecting donations (fidget items, books, and toys) for those being treated for depression at Advanced Pediatrics.
