In 1957, a courageous Black couple from Purcellville stood against many elected officials and business leaders in Loudoun County to gain the right to check out a book from the Purcellville Library.

Paul McCray, a recipient of the 2011 Thomas Balch Library’s Loudoun History Award, shares the story of Purcellville's Civil Rights pioneers.
