View a display of Madhubani folk art. The artist's work reflects the three main themes in Madhubani art: religion, social scenes, and elements of nature.
Madhubani folk art originated from the Mithila region of the Indian subcontinent. Traditionally, this art form used natural colors extracted from plant leaves, flowers, fruits, and other parts of plants. A distinctive feature of Madhubani painting is that no blank space is left within the design. After the major figures are drawn, the remaining areas are filled either with geometrical shapes like triangles, squares, and circles, or with motifs of flowers, animals, and birds.
Mita Mathur is an artist based in Loudoun County. She has exhibited her work at local, regional, and national levels. Her most recent show took place during the World Cultural Festival on the National Mall.
