Stephan Saalfeld, a group leader at HHMI's Janelia Research Campus, discusses the complexity of biological systems and their interactions, explaining how AI aids in understanding them. For ages 21+.

Stephan Saalfeld is a computer scientist from Germany. He joined Janelia in 2013, after finishing his PhD at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics and the Technische Universität in Dresden. Currently, he is Senior Group Leader and Head of Computation and Theory. His lab works on scalable data analysis, modeling, and AI, focusing on neural circuits and cell biology. Saalfeld is an open-source buff and has developed several open-source software libraries and tools that are pretty popular (in the scientific community). He co-leads the new AI@HHMI initiative at Janelia.
