Explore how astronomy has stimulated science fiction written by astronomers, about astronomers, or astronomical discoveries, such as black holes with Eric Novotny of the NOVA Astronomy Club.
Popular science fiction is filled with astronomical themes. These themes include adventures on other planets, stellar objects that threaten humanity, faster-than-light travel, and parallel universes, among many others. Dr. Eric Novotny compares and contrasts these themes with their real-life (or predicted!) counterparts.
Dr. Eric J. Novotny is Hurst Professor of International Relations, Emeritus, at The American University. He is a life-long science fiction fan and avid amateur astronomer. Novotny has held senior executive positions in the aerospace industry at Hughes Electronics and Lockheed Martin and is a former US Air force officer. He lives in Fairfax Station, Virginia, with his wife Andrea and three telescopes.
