Naturalist Lindsay Loyd provides an overview of the life cycle and anatomy of these insects, along with photographs and fun facts about multiple species found in the area.
Loudoun County is home to at least 54 species of dragonflies and 29 species of damselflies. They spend a great part of their lives in ponds and streams before emerging as airborne predators that are recognized among the most successful hunters on the planet. While they may snack on some of the pollinators in your garden, they are also feasting on mosquitoes and gnats, and their presence is a good indicator of the success of your garden and the health of our waterways.
