Madhubani Folk Art

Mita Mathur's art reflects the three themes in Madhubani art: religion, social scenes and elements of nature. The exhibit runs from May 4-June 30.

Madhubani folk art is a style of Indian painting practiced in the Mithila region of the Indian subcontinent. Traditionally this painting was done using natural colors extracted from plant leaves, flowers, fruits and other parts of plants. The specialty of this art form is that no blank space is left in the design. Once the major figures are drawn, the rest of the area is covered either with geometrical shapes like triangles, squares and circles, or with the motifs of flowers, animals and birds. 

Mathur is an artist based in Loudoun County. She has exhibited her artwork at local, regional and national levels and her most recent show was at the World Cultural Festival on the National Mall.
