Dr. Gerry Galloway discusses how President Lincoln, General Grant, and General Joshua Chamberlin's actions impacted the end of the Civil War and its aftermath.
The leaders respected the sacrifices of the vanquished and reduced the potential for post-war conflict. They also reflected the bonds of professionalism that exists among combatants on the battlefield, even in the midst of beastly combat. The discussion concludes with the story of an American colonel who is killed in an aerial battle by a Japanese pilot who later comes to meet with his family and pray for his afterlife and the safety of his family.
Dr. Gerry Galloway, PE, PhD, Brigadier General, US Army (Retired) is an Emeritus Research Professor of Engineering at the University of Maryland where his focus is on disaster resilience and mitigation, sustainable infrastructure development, and national security, water resources and energy policy under climate change.
