Catch crafter Diane Helentjaris in action as she explores both traditional and modern needlework, ranging from Civil War-era penny rugs and cotton quilts to today's slow stitching trend.
Join Helentjaris with your needlework during the Artist-in-Residence series on Wednesdays, Jan. 22 through March 26 (except for March 5).
She will also be presenting three programs at Rust Library:
What's in your Button Jar? on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2 p.m.
Penny Rugs on Monday, Feb. 10, 7 p.m.
Slow Stitching Workshop on Monday, March 24, 7 p.m.
Helentjaris has enjoyed needlework since she created her first piece of embroidery at the age of five. As a published author, Helentjaris's Substack newsletter The Silk Mill explores the world of fabric for those enamored with lace, buttons, cloth, and everything else associated with textiles. During her residency, she will share what she loves: from simple sashiko Japanese embroidery to its free-form offshoot, slow stitching. Discover how frugality led to the impressive beauty of penny rugs, quilts, and visible mending and how everyday household goods can be upcycled into useful, fun projects.
