Austen enthusiast Rita Baker-Schmidt compares the Georgian Era style of Maryland's Hampton Mansion to Pemberley, the fictional Regency Era English estate in Pride and Prejudice.
Just north of Baltimore lies the stately Federal manor house of the Ridgely family, Hampton Mansion. Once the largest private home in Colonial America, Hampton and its original 8,000-acre estate were modeled after the great houses of Britain. At its peak in 1820, a person looking out the mansion’s cupola could gaze in all directions upon lands owned by the Ridgelys.
Jane Austen drew inspiration from several models for the grand country estates in her novels. It is widely believed that Pemberley, Mr. Darcy’s estate in Pride and Prejudice, was based on Chatsworth House in Devonshire.
